Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

About the IELTS Academic and General tests, both Computer-based and Pen-paper based:

IELTS Academic is intended for those who want to enrol in universities and other institutions of higher education. The IELTS General Training is for those planning to undertake non-academic training or to gain work experience, or for immigration purposes.
The test content and structure are the same for both versions, but the method of taking the test is different. In the computer-based test, Listening, Reading, and Writing are done on a computer while Speaking is still face-to-face with an examiner. In the Pen-paper test, all components are taken with paper and pen.
The total test time is 2 hours and 45 minutes. The Listening test is 30 minutes, the Reading test is 60 minutes, the Writing test is 60 minutes, and the Speaking test is 11–14 minutes.
There's no limit to the number of times you can sit the IELTS test. However, it is advisable to take some time for additional study before you re-take the test.
You can register for the test either online or in person at your local test center.
The Speaking test is a conversation with a certified IELTS Examiner and consists of three parts: a brief introduction and interview, an individual long turn where you speak for one to two minutes on a particular topic, and a two-way discussion.
The Writing test is marked by a certified IELTS examiner who will assess your ability to organize ideas, use a range of vocabulary and grammatical structures, and present a clear, well-supported argument.
For the paper-based test, you must use a pencil for the Listening and Reading tests. For the computer-based test, you will input your answers using a keyboard.
For the paper-based test, results are typically available within 13 days of taking the test. For the computer-based test, results are available within 5-7 days.
Depending on the reason and the amount of notice given, you may be able to receive a refund or reschedule your test date. It's important to check the specific policies of the test center where you've registered.
